Saint Gregory I the Great or Pope Saint Gregory I was pope from September 3, 590 until his death.
He is also known as Gregory the Dialogist in Eastern Orthodoxy because of the Dialogues he wrote. For this reason, English translations of Orthodox texts will sometimes list him as "Gregory Dialogus". He was the first of the Popes from a monastic background. Gregory is a Doctor of the Church and one of the four great Latin Fathers of the Church . Of all popes, Gregory I had the most influence on the early medieval church.
