Mohammad Khatami is an Iranian scholar and politician. He served as the fifth President of Iran from August 2, 1997 to August 2, 2005, and was succeeded by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. He also acted as Iran's Minister of Culture in 1980s and 1990s.
During his presidency, Khatami was an advocate of freedom of expression, tolerance and civil society. His government tried to establish constructive diplomatic relations with other states including EU and Asian governments. His economic policy was mostly a continuation of former policy of free market and attraction of foreign investments.
